Use art to depict social maladies, says DC

An annual art exhibition, was held at Satya Paul Art Gallery at Virsa Vihar, here on Tuesday. The exhibition was organised by Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi Chandigarh, in collaboration with the Apeejay College of Fine Arts.As many as 116 art pieces by 88 different artists were displayed at the exibition. Diwan Manna, president of Lalit Kala Akademi, was the resource person of the event. He spoke about the dire need of creative art and sculpture in the state. He said, next year, young artists would be given a chance to present their creations at national and international level.He said 30 art pieces were made by those artists who were invited to display their creations. As many as 43 pieces were moulded by professional artists while 43 pieces by student artists from all across the state.Internationally acclaimed art connoisseurs Mithu Sen and Sonia Khurana adjudicated the art works and judged eight works worthy of award. Three professional artists — Amarbir Singh, Jaspreet Singh and Mangat Singh — will be awarded Rs 50,000 each while eight student artists Gurmeet Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Neha Gupta and Gurjeet Singh were awarded Rs 25,000 each.Deputy Commissioner (DC) Varinder Kumar Sharma also gave a clarion call to the artists to come forward for highlighting social maladies, especially, the curse of drugs, through their creations for further sensitising the people on this serious issue.He said the artistic creations could play a major role in transforming the society adding that the creations of artists leave an indelible imprint on the minds of people.
