ECLECTIC MIX OF ART

The annual art show of the Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi showcases 116 artworks by 88 artists from across state

The annual art exhibition of the Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi (PLKA) offers an interesting eclectic mix of artworks by young artists as well as invited works by senior artists from Punjab and Chandigarh in a show put together with care and imagination.

HT PHOTONeha Gupta’s painting, Isolation. The exhibition, which aims at encouraging and honing talent in the region, will be inaugurated by well-known poet and art writer Ashok Vajpayee at the Punjab Kala Bhawan Gallery on Thursday evening.

PLKA, chairperson, Diwan Manna, said,“The aim was to select and award best entries in an unbiased manner, so we had a two-member jury comprising acclaimed artists Mithu Sen and Sonia Khurana from Delhi to select the winners.”

It is interesting to watch the works that come from Punjab like Jaspreet Singh’s award-winning art painting ‘Life of My Village’, worked realistically frame by frame. The Mansa painter gives an ideal view of the calm which is against the distraught rural scene of the state today.

Artists Riya Abrol and Ramneet Kaur, on the other hand, use printed text as a backdrop for their evocative works depicting agony and change.

Gurjeet Singh’s ‘The Lady with Pink Lips’ is an interesting mixed-media sculpture which catches the eye rightfully and has won an award in the students’ category. Neha Gupta’s decorative yet emotive work ‘Isolation’ depicting a cage of the birds has been worked out in cross-stitch tapestry.

The exhibition has been well designed using a section of works by senior artists to inspire the youth. Some of the well-known artists in this category include Balvinder, Madan Lal, JS Garcha, Jaskanwal, Satwant Singh, Bheem Malhotra, Ram Pratap Verma and Sadhna Sanghar.
