Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi is to organise an Exhibition of rare photographs of iconic Punjabi poet Dhani Ram Chatrik during the Dhani Ram Chatrik Memorial Festival on his birth anniversary at his village Lopoke (Amritsar) on 24th September 2017 at10.00 am at Government Senior Secondary School, Lopoke.

The exhibition shows unseen rare photographs of the poet and with his contemporaries, his hand written manuscript, an oil portrait by GS Sohan Singh, book covers of his books, elegy written by Amrita Pritam in 1954 on his death, drawings by Inderjeet Imroz and an article by Amarjit Chandan on Punjabi printing presses.

 

The exhibition compiled by Diwan Manna and presented by Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi, and Punjab Arts Council was made possible from the collections of Amarjit Chandan, Punjab Digital Library, Sandeep Singh, Hardeep Singh, Punjab Sahit Akademi and Surjit Patar.

Background

Dhani Ram Chatrik (Pasiãnwala, Sheikhupura 1876 – Amritsar, 1954) is a major signature of modern Punjabi literature. His contribution to Punjabi typography and the printing of Punjabi books with the modern technique is as important. He was the first person to design and make the letterpress type fonts of the Gurmukhi script, print Guru Granth Sahib and Bhai Kahn Singh’s Mahãn Kosh, and all the books by Bhai Vir Singh at Wazir Hind Press and his Sudarshan Printing Press in Amritsar.
