Prabhinder Lall, though a graphic artist with an eye for architectural forms and geometric patterns quite evocative of Chandigarh, the city he lives in, was born in rural Ratainda, District Nawanshahar of Punjab, in 1955. Indeed, Chandigarh has been his training ground and perhaps his muse as well, for he studied for his Masters in Applied Art from the College of Art here, from 1975-79.

As a freelance graphic artist and visualizer he has worked since the 1980’s with top advertising firms such as Alfred Allan, Lintas India, Marketing Mix Group India Ltd. and Elevation Advertising Pvt. Ltd. From 2012-‘13 he also did a stint in teaching, as Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Fine Arts, Applied Arts and Animation at Lovely Professional University, Punjab. However, drawing and painting, whether with pencil or the computer mouse, remains his first and enduring love.

Among the many state and national level exhibitions that he has participated in are All India Art Exhibitions of Drawings, Prints at College of Art, Chandigarh; National Exhibitions of Art by Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, Exhibitions of Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi and Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi and at least a dozen annual All India Art Exhibitions at  AIFACS New Delhi and  Indian Academy of Fine Arts, Amritsar. At the international level, Lall has made his mark in International Art festivals in Bhutan, Nepal, Korea and Turkey.   He has also been participating in several prestigious artists camps across the country for many years.

His works are in important art collections and museums like Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi ; Museum & Art Gallery, Chandigarh;  Museum, Punjabi University, Patiala; North Zone Culture Centre, Patiala; and Himachal State Museum, Shimla.

Awards come naturally to those who are talented and whose creative output is remarkable. Lall too has won many awards from the 1980’s onward: the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi Award, the Annual Exhibition Award by Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi, and 3 National level awards by AIFACS. He has  also been awarded a Senior Fellowship in the field of Visual Art from 2012-’13 by the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India for his project on Environmental Art and Architecture related to Rural and Urban Landscape.

Through his graphic art creations, Lall comments on the contemporary urbanization of the rural and the modern fast-paced lifestyle of city dwellers. Forms of nature—sea, sky and undulating plains– give way to colourful, geometric patterns—squares, circles, rectangles— in the urbanized topography of bustling city life.

Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi feels honoured in conferring the Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi Sanmaan upon Shri Prabhinder Lall.
