CITATION
Professor Brijinder Nath Goswamy is India’s most distinguished art historian today. His work, both in research and teaching, has influenced a whole generation of scholars by enabling different ways of seeing and thinking about Indian art, bringing the art of the past and the present to centre-stage in the world.
Born on the 15thAugust 1933 to Kaushalya and B. L. Goswamy at Sargodha, in former undivided Punjab, Professor Goswamy received his Master’s and Doctoral degrees from Panjab University, Chandigarh, setting new academic records. In 1956 he was selected for, and joined, the Indian Administrative Service, but soon resigned from it in favour of teaching. His first teaching assignment abroad at the University of Kiel in Germany opened up an exciting new world for him–that of art history, and on returning to India in 1963, he became instrumental in founding the Department of Art History at Panjab University. From 1967, when he was appointed Professor of Art History till date as Professor Emeritus, he has nurtured the Department and steadily developed it to attain international repute.
Professor Goswamy’s erudition and expertise, as well as his oratorical prowess have caught the attention of many institutions across the world. He has been Visiting Professor of Art History at numerous universities, notably at Heidelberg in Germany, at Universities of Pennsylvania, California, Los Angeles, and Texas in the United States; and the University of Zurich in Switzerland. He has been President of the Indian Association of Art Historians and has been awarded prestigious Fellowships such as the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship, the John D. Rockefeller Fellowship, the Mellon Senior Fellowship, and also the Tagore National Fellowship for Cultural Research from the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India. He was also invited to be the Commissioner and Guest Curator of major international exhibitions: among them, those at the Museum Rietberg in Zurich, the Musee Guimet in Paris, the Museum of Asian Art in San Francisco, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Museum of Applied Arts in Frankfurt, the Rubin Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and the Royal Asiatic Society in recognition of his international stature.
Professor Goswamy has been continuously researching and writing for almost half a century, and from the twenty-five books he has written till now, a large number have become benchmarks, drawing significant national and international attention. Among these are Pahari Painting: The Family as the Basis of Style (Mumbai, 1968); Painters at the Sikh Court (Wiesbaden, 1975); The Essence of Indian Art (San Francisco, 1986); Pahari Masters: Court Painters of Northern India (Zurich, 1990);Indian Costumes in the collection of the Calico Museum of Textiles (Ahmedabad, 1993); Nainsukh of Guler: A great Indian Painter from a small Hill State (Zurich, 1997); Piety and Splendour: Sikh Heritage in Art (Delhi, 2000); Domains of Wonder (San Diego, 2005); The Word is Sacred/Sacred is the Word (Delhi, 2006), Wondrous Images: Krishna as Shrinathji (Ahmedabad, 2014); and The Spirit of Indian Painting (Penguin and Thames & Hudson, 2014). His most recent work, Manaku of Guler: Another Great Indian Painter from a Small Hill State (Zurich and Delhi, 2017) was released a few months ago.
Professor Goswamy was given the Rietberg Award in Switzerland in 2000 for outstanding research in Art History. He was awarded the coveted Padma Shri in 1988, and more recently, the Padma Bhushan in 2008, by the President of India for his vast contribution to art history.
The Punjab Arts Council deems it an honour and privilege to present this Punjab Gaurav Sanmaan to Professor Goswamy.

ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਗੋਸਵਾਮੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਟੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਸੀਟਿੰਗ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਦੇ ਬਤੌਰ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਪੰਜਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਵਰ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਪੜਾਹ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ . ੧੯੫੪ ਵਿਚ ਆਈ ਏ ਐੱਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਖਿਆ ਪਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਅਸਤੀਫਾ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਤੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਵਕਤ ਕਲਾ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਬਿਤਾਉਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ . ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਕਲਾ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ੧੯੬੭ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਨੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਕਲਾ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਵਿਭਾਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਵਿਚ ਅਣਮੁੱਲਾ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ .
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਦਮ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ , ਪਦਮ ਭੂਸ਼ਣ , ਟੈਗੋਰ ਨੈਸ਼ਨਲ ਫੈਲੋਸ਼ਿਪ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਅਨੇਕ ਮਾਨ ਸਨਮਾਨਾ ਨਾਲ ਨਵਾਜ਼ਿਆ ਗਿਆ .
ਆਪਜੀ ਜਵਾਹਰਲਾਲ ਨਹਿਰੂ ਫੈਲੋਸ਼ਿਪ, ਰੌਕਫੈਲਰ ਫੈਲੋਸ਼ਿਪ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਲਨ ਸੀਨੀਅਰ ਫੈਲੋਸ਼ਿਪ ਵੀ ਮਿਲੀਆਂ . ਗੋਸਵਾਮੀ ਜੀ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਕਲਾ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਤੇ ੨੫ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਲਿਖ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿਚ ਅਨਮੋਲ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਪਾ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਹਾਲੇ ਵੀ ਇਹ ਸਿਲਸਿਲਾ ਹੋਰ ਵੀ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਰਫਤਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਰੀ ਹੈ . ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਵਿਸ਼ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਹਨ ਪਰੰਤੂ ਪਹਾੜੀ ਚਿੱਤਰਕਲਾ , ਨੈਨਸੁਖ ਆਫ਼ ਗੁਲੇਰ, ਮਾਣਕੁ, ਸਿੱਖ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤਰਕਾਰ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਯੋਗ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹਨ.
ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਗੋਸਵਾਮੀ ੧੫ ਅਗਸਤ ੧੯੩੩ ਵਿਚ ਅਣਵੰਡੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ , ਸਰਗੋਧਾ (ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ) ਵਿਚ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਏ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ. ਇਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਆਪਜੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਏਮਿਰਿੱਤਸ ਵੱਜੋਂ ਤਾਇਨਾਤ ਹਨ . ਆਪਜੀ ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ ਦੇ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਹਨ .
ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਲਈ ਖਾਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਸਜਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਕਲਾ ਭਵਨ ਦਾ ਵੇਹੜਾ ਸਰੋਤਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਨੱਕੋ ਨੱਕ ਭਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ. ਗੋਸਵਾਮੀ ਸਾਹਬ ਦਾ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਮਿਨੀਐਚਰ ਚਿੱਤਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੋਜੇਕਸ਼ਨ ਨਾਲ ਹੋਰ ਵੀ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਵਧੀਆ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਦਰਸ਼ਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਸਮਝਣਾ ਸੌਖਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ . ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੁਰਾਤਨ ਸਮਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਚਿਤਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ “ਸਮੇ” ਨੂੰ ਵਿਅਕਤ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਤਕਨੀਕ ਬਾਰੇ ਵੀ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਪਾਇਆ .
ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਲਲਿਤ ਕਲਾ ਅਕਾਦਮੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਘੇ ਕਲਾਕਾਰ ਦੀਵਾਨ ਮਾਨਾ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਗੋਸਵਾਮੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਬੋਲਦਿਆਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਪਿਛਲੀ ਸਦੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਨੰਦ ਕੁਮਾਰਸ੍ਵਾਮੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਗੋਸਵਾਮੀ ਹੀ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਲਾ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਏ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਬਾਰੇ ਪੂਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਦਰ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਣ ਨਾਲ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ . ਗੋਸਵਾਮੀ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਕਲਾ ਦੀਆਂ ਬਾਰੀਕੀਆਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਵਿਸਥਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਲਿਖੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਲੇਖਾਂ ਰਹੀ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਕਲਾਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਰੁਤਬਾ ਪੂਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਚਾ ਕਰਵਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਵੱਖਰੀ ਪਹਿਚਾਣ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਵਿਚ ਮਦਦ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ .
ਪੰਜਾਬ ਕਲਾ ਪਰਿਸ਼ਦ ਦੇ ਚੇਅਰਮੈਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਘੇ ਕਵੀ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਪਾਤਰ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਗੋਸਵਾਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਕਲਾ ਪਰਿਸ਼ਦ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਗੌਰਵ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਸ਼ੋਭਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ.
ਇਸ ਭਰੀ ਸਭਾ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗ ਮੰਚ ਦੀ ਨਿਰਦੇਸ਼ਕ ਨੀਲਾਮ ਮਾਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਚੌਧਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਕਲਾ, ਸਾਹਿਤ , ਸੰਗੀਤ ਨਾਟਕ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਸ਼ਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਬਹੁਰ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਮਸ਼ਹੂਰ ਹਸਤੀਆਂ ਹਾਜਰ ਸਨ .
